How these are made

Role and production

Half of each player’s rate is what he has scored this season, half is what his targets and carries are worth for an average player from the same spots on the field, so touchdown luck washes out. A game he left early is dropped.

Last season as a check

His points per game last season count as three extra games, so a few weeks of data are not taken at face value. Rookies go on this season alone.

The matchup

The defense he faces, measured by how much each play against it gains (EPA allowed) against the pass, or a run-heavy mix for running backs. A soft defense two standard deviations from average adds about 6%; a tough one takes it away. The Matchup column shows the familiar number: where the opponent ranks in PPR points allowed per game to his position this season, 1st allowing the fewest and 32nd the most (green from 23rd, red to 10th).

Who is ranked

Players ruled out or doubtful on the official injury report, on injured reserve or another reserve list, and quarterbacks behind the starter on the depth chart are listed below the ranked players. Questionable players are ranked and flagged.

How we tested it

Every week 4 to 17 of the 2024 and 2025 seasons, projected with only what was known before kickoff. Our order matched what players went on to score better than a season-average ranking in 21 of 28 weeks. The matchup adjustment improved it in 18 of 28. The usual “points allowed to the position” matchup chart did not help at all, so we don’t use it.

What it can’t know

Weekly scoring swings a lot: even the best rankings get plenty of single weeks wrong. Late injury news, weather and game-day role changes are not in it, so check the report before kickoff.
